Bali / Philippines / Thailand

Malaysia’s state of Terengganu caresses the country’s east coast, and is blessed with a wealth of natural treasures ranging from exotic beaches to lush tropical groves. The South China Sea washes up onto its two hundred and twenty-five kilometers of sandy shores, and centrally perched is the coastal capital of Kuala Terengganu (kwä´le tereng-gä´noo for those of us who gravitate phonetically)...read more »

Melaka
Melaka wears its past like a rich cloak around the shoulders of its present. At Dutch Square, trishaws flit past like brightly hued butterflies, their canopies festooned with paper flower garlands, while souvenir, handicraft shops and food vendors line the sidewalks. The backdrop to this contemporary scene is Christ Church, built by the Dutch in 1753-a stolid brick structure with a deep red laterite façade.

Stadthuys Town Hall, which now houses an Ethnographic Museum, also flanks Dutch Square. Completed around 1660, it is one of the oldest examples of Dutch architecture in the East....read more about Melaka

Penang
Although Penang's Butterfly Farm isn't unique-both Kuala Lumpur and Singapore have similar attractions-it nonetheless grabs my attention for well over an hour, As I try to capture shots of butterflies flickering like brightly-coloured confetti around me, I notice a small boy beaming with delight as a gigantic Raja Brooke, black with dramatic emerald green markings, settles on his hand. His older sister, meanwhile, is transfixed in front of a glass-fronted display window as a cocoon starts to split open to reveal a soggy-winged brand new butterfly. Apart from about 120 species of winged performers, there are other resident virtuosos. Two small horned toads stare beady-eyed at me, and a spiny stick insect freezes into camouflage mode on a brown twig. Next door, a tarantula is wooing his mate, and family life also seems to be thriving in the scorpion household, with baby scorpions shimmying around their mum. In the world of beetles, a large stag beetle flexes his mandibles (equivalent, perhaps, to a macho guy showing off his biceps?), and a long armed Scarab brings to mind a stylized Egyptian emblem.....read more about Penang

Taman Negara ...on the three hour trip to the Taman Negara National Park. I sit in a long boat, listening to the chatter of our group rising and falling around me. The river is dappled khaki and green, lying between its banks like a rumpled sleeve torn off an army camouflage jacket. Clumps of reeds and grass cling to the water's edge and behind them the jungle crouches, brooding and implacable. Here and there, creepers, with obscenely vivid orange flowers, twist their death grip around tree trunks and vines loop from branch to branch, their leaves falling like curtains to the ground. Shifting light and shadow turn the foliage into bizarre silhouettes-elephant heads, their trunks raised against the sky, a pterodactyl-type reptilian creature, survivor of the Jurassic age, craning its neck in flight-and the sideways profile of a man's face, gaunt and hollow eyed. I stare at it as we sweep past and straighten up in my seat with a queer little shock. The skinny old man at the dock-that's who it looks like. Was he real or did I imagine him?.....read more about Taman Negara

Sakau
We pull off into a narrow tributary off the main river, and the jungle is alive with bird warbles, the rustle of undergrowth as a tribe of long-tailed macaques forage for their evening meal, and the occasional whoop of a silvered langur drifting down to us from the crown of the forest canopy. The boatman slows to a crawl, and pulls up to an overhanging branch. Blending almost completely with a broad flat leaf, is a coiled green Wrangler Pit Viper....read more »

Tenom
The train jerks, shudders and takes off, its engine shrieking a warning as we rattle over suburban level crossings. In less than an hour we are in rural Borneo. I lean out of the window, the humid air playing against my face, and look out at small kampung (village) settlements, their wooden houses perched on stilts, at children waving to us, and dense tropical foliage, interspersed with paddy fields and palm groves. The train settles into a rhythm, swaying as it winds along the track and crosses trestle bridges over rivers coiling like brown ropes through mangrove swamps. We clatter past flowering hibiscus bushes, and flame trees festooned with purple morning glory creepers; white cranes preen themselves on sandbars and buffaloes wallow in mudflats..... .read more »
