PACIFIC COAST ISLANDS
ALASKA
The Alaska Highway itself is 1,390 miles long, ending at Delta Junction, Alaska. Another 98 miles brings you to Fairbanks. The road is paved all the way, and services are rarely more than 100 miles apart--usually closer.
Once in the Yukon, motorists can drive to Dawson City, ground zero of the Klondike Gold Rush, and over the Top of the World highway to Alaska. The Dempster Highway leads north from Dawson to Inuvik, through the Northwest Territories. It Is not paved but in good summer weather can be driven comfortably.
In Alaska one can drive from Anchorage to Denali National Park, home of the continent's highest mountain, spectacular Mount McKinley, in eight hours on good paved highway. Four more hours brings you to Fairbanks, with road access to the Yukon and points north. Many northern highways offer good driving conditions, breathtaking mountain and ocean views, and very little traffic apart from the occasional moose or bear ambling across the roadway...read more »
Juneau Alaska
Although some of the shops still stock the usual kitsch of key chains, totem poles and mass produced Eskimo dolls, most of the boutiques and art galleries are filled with expensive merchandise. The windows glitter with jewelry (amethysts, diamonds and sapphires set in filigreed gold earrings, necklaces and bracelets) as well as furs, Lladro porcelain figurines, oil paintings, West Coast native carvings of wood, antler horn and walrus ivory, tooled leather knife sheathes, bead ornaments, and an interesting variety of Russian Matreshka dolls, cloisonné trinkets and pretty miniature boxes of woven bark. The gold-rush days are over, but Juneau's wealth still pours in, mined today from the pockets of tourists who gladly invest in the town's abundance of superbly crafted objets d'art. With an average 450,000 summer visitors to the town each year, this translates to the equivalent of several pounds of shiny gold nuggets.

CALIFORNIA
Coronado Island
If there is one place where Southern California charm, history, style, beaches and sun all converge, it has to be on the 7.4 square miles of ground you’ll find at the west end of the sweeping, skyscraper-high Coronado Bridge. The makers of the movie "Some like it Hot" were certainly onto something when Coronado Island was selected for that movie’s locale....read more »

San Francisco
On the surface San Francisco is all the cliché tourist icons that we know: the Golden Gate bridge, Alcatraz, Chinatown, etc. But also keep in mind, San Francisco itself is fairly small geographically – not to mention that excluding the residential areas – the city is the home of the SF Giants. During the summertime, a great family-friendly place to catch a ballgame. Sit in the upper deck to see the Bay and the real obvious tourist area of SF. Most residents of the Bay Area do not go down there except to bring friends and relatives. There are restaurants and lots of shopping directed towards tourists. Of course, at Fisherman’s Wharf, you can get the famous crab. (Crab season is September/October to about April). You can eat crab all year round but they’re best in season. And while it’s not really a SF tradition (really an L.A. tradition), the only In ‘N Out Burger joint in SF is at the Fisherman’s Wharf area so if you haven’t had one – get it there! The Pier area (Pier 40 and further south at the Ferry Building) is where the ferries arrive from around the rest of the Bay Area. The mile between the Ferry Building and Pier 39 is an uncluttered waterfront view of underneath the Bay Bridge, Oakland, Berkeley and further east....read more »

Santa Catalina:
This beautiful island lies just 26 miles across the ocean from the hustle and bustle of Los Angeles. Yet it might be thousands of miles away.
As soon as you step ashore you can feel the pace of life slow perceptibly. Even the name of the main 'town' on the island is evocative - Avalon.
The 76 square mile island was originally owned by the Wrigley Family (of chewing gum fame) but over 80% is now owned by The Santa Catalina Island Conservancy. The island's interior is unspoilt and protected as a wildlife natural habitat....read more »

Santa Monica
West of the 405 Freeway is Santa Monica. A huge sprawling city itself of immense economic diversity with its own neighborhoods.
For teens and tourists, the mall, the pier and the boardwalk are big draws – for other LA natives – not so much. But LA natives will tolerate the 3rd street promenade as it’s one of the few areas of Santa Monica with nice restaurants AND parking. For shopping, Santa Monica has little hidden pockets like Montana Street and others who are willing to venture off the beaten path....read more »

Oregon
If you were to choose eight of the most romantic and unique hikes around Portland, Oregon, which ones would they be and why?...
Opal Creek Wilderness in the fall, because it's a dense, lovely ancient-growth forest with a truly magical stream winding through it. You can swim in a deep pool and then wander among the giant trees, listening to birds and the breeze through the brances.
Vista Ridge in the late summer, when the flowers are blooming in the meadows right at the base of Mount Hood especially Elk Cove, where I always expect to see hobbits dancing around.
The loop from Wahkeena Falls to Multnomah Fallls, because it's filled with waterfalls and tall trees and wildflowers, and it winds up at an ice cream stand!
Catherine Creek in April. There are almost 100 different species of flowers all blooming at the same time....read more »
Washington
While plying through the ocean chop, we breeze by regal sailboats, bobbing kayaks, and seining fishing vessels that look like looming pterodactyls. Emerald isles, thick with evergreen virgin forests, flank our aquatic passageway. They're fringed by driftwood clad beaches, craggy west coast granite and cozy inlet bays that shelter waterfront homes...read more »
